It is wet most of the summer, it is walked on barefoot, and it sits on backfilled soil around the pool shell that often settles. Those three facts drive the design.
For bare feet in valley sun we recommend light colours and textured finishes such as broom, salt finish or a cool-deck style coating. Dark stamped surfaces get very hot. The deck slopes away from the pool to drains or planting so splash water and rain do not sit. Between the deck and the pool coping there is a flexible joint that must be kept sealed, because water getting through it softens the soil underneath and the deck drops.
Older decks can sometimes be resurfaced with a bonded coating if the slabs are sound and level. Panels that have sunk or lifted are better replaced. Work around a pool also has to respect the bonding wire, the plumbing and the equipment pad. We protect the water from dust and slurry during demolition and pouring.

Can my old pool deck be resurfaced instead of replaced?
If the slabs are solid, level and only worn or stained, a resurfacing coating can work well. If panels have dropped, tilted or cracked wide, the coating will crack in the same places, and replacement of those panels is the better choice.
What pool deck finish is not slippery?
A broom finish, a salt finish or a textured coating all give grip when wet. Sealed stamped concrete needs a non-slip additive. We avoid smooth trowelled finishes around water.
Why is my deck pulling away from the pool?
The backfill around the pool shell has settled, often helped by water leaking through the joint at the coping. The joint should be resealed, and panels that have moved may need replacing on a recompacted base.
