Concrete Cutting and Polishing in San Jose, CA

Remodels and ADUs in San Jose often need a trench cut through a slab. We check for in-floor heating pipes and post-tension cables before any cut. We also grind and polish floors for homes and businesses.

Cutting and polishing are two different trades that share diamond tools. Cutting means sawing through concrete cleanly: a straight edge before demolition, a trench across a floor for a new drain or conduit, an opening for a door or window in a concrete wall, or new control joints in a slab that was poured without enough. Polishing means grinding a floor in steps until the concrete itself becomes the finished surface.

In San Jose a lot of cutting is driven by remodels and ADUs. A bathroom added to a garage conversion needs a trench through the slab for the drain line. Before any interior cut we want to know what is in the slab. Homes with in-floor heat have pipes in the concrete, and some slabs contain post-tension cables, which must never be cut without an engineer's direction. We scan or check records first when there is any doubt.

Polished concrete suits homes, shops, offices and showrooms. It is hard-wearing, easy to clean and has no coating to peel. The look depends on the slab: grinding exposes whatever is there, including patches and old cracks, which many people like and some do not. We grind a sample area first. Dust is controlled with vacuums or wet cutting, and slurry is collected and not washed into the street drains.

Concrete cutting and polishing in San Jose: common questions

Can you cut a trench in my slab for plumbing?

Yes. We mark the route, check for pipes, cables and in-floor heat, saw both sides, remove the strip and repour it after the plumber is done and the work is inspected.

What is a post-tension slab and how do I know if I have one?

It is a slab with steel cables stretched tight inside it. Newer homes sometimes have a stamp in the garage floor saying so. Cutting a cable is dangerous, so if there is any doubt we have the slab scanned first.

Is polished concrete slippery?

A properly polished floor has good grip when clean and dry. Like any hard floor it is slick when wet or dusty. Entry mats and the right level of sheen manage that.

We needed to replace our cracked driveway and add a stamped concrete walkway. This team is a good concrete contractor in San Jose. They handled the city permit requirements for the approach perfectly and ensured the drainage was graded away from our foundation. The stamped concrete finish looks high-end and really boosted our curb appeal.
