Stamped concrete gives a stone, slate or brick look in a single reinforced slab. Dry valley heat shortens the time a crew has to stamp, so these pours are planned for early morning. We show color samples outdoors before quoting.
Stamped concrete is ordinary reinforced concrete that is coloured and pressed with patterned mats while it is still soft, so it ends up looking like stone, slate, brick or wood plank. In San Jose it is mostly chosen for patios, front walks, pool surrounds and the visible part of a driveway. Because it is one continuous slab, there are no loose pavers for the clay to push out of line and no sand joints for weeds.
Timing is the hard part in this climate. On a warm, dry, breezy valley afternoon the surface can stiffen before the crew has finished stamping, which leaves shallow or uneven texture. We schedule stamped pours for early morning, keep the pour size matched to the crew, and avoid the hottest days. Colour is another local point: strong sun fades some pigments and makes dark slabs hot, so we show samples outdoors and talk through how each one ages.
Stamped concrete needs a sealer to protect the colour, and the sealer needs renewing every few years. Sealed stamped concrete is slick when wet unless a grip additive is mixed into the sealer, so we include one on walks, steps and pool decks. We cannot promise a slab with no cracks. We place joints so that the cracks follow the pattern lines where they are hard to see.
Stamped & decorative concrete in San Jose: common questions
Is stamped concrete slippery when it rains?
It can be if the sealer is glossy and has no grit in it. We add a non-slip additive to the sealer on any surface people walk on wet, and we suggest a lighter texture for slopes and pool surrounds.
Does stamped concrete fade in the San Jose sun?
Colour softens over the years, mostly as the sealer wears. Resealing brings much of the depth back. Integral colour mixed through the concrete holds better than colour only on the surface. Pale and earth tones age more evenly than strong reds or charcoals.
Can you match the stamped pattern I already have?
Sometimes. Patterns can often be matched, but colour on an old sun-aged slab is hard to copy exactly. We bring samples and tell you plainly how close we expect to get before you decide.
